Where We’ve Been

Yesterday was an incredible trip down the Icefields Parkway, through Jasper and Banff National Parks. We took the old highway from just south of Jasper to Athabasca Falls, Alberta 93A. Through the icefields, past countless glaciers and breathtaking, in…

Jasper to Banff, BC

O… M… G…! The Maligne Valley experience yesterday was just foreplay for today’s experience. We drove the 240 km from Jasper to Banff though the heart of the Canadian Rockies. It was magnificent, beautiful, breathtaking, huge, brutal, barren, lush, cold, inspiring and belittling. Larra and I took 485 photos between us. Here are a couple […]

Where We’ve Been

Sunday, June 12 through Saturday, June 18. We started out Wednesday morning in Surrey, near Vancouver. Drove up Fraser Canyon through Hell’s Gate and Cache Creek to Kamloops, then up through Clearwater to Jasper, Alberta, and Jasper National Park. On Saturday we drove up Maligne Canyon to Maligne Lake, and back to Jasper.

The Old Man of the Mountain

Jasper, Alberta – I was taking photos of a church this afternoon when a construction worker walks across the street and comes up to me. I thought he was a firefighter, with his heavy yellow coat and pants with reflective tape, his helmet, face shield and heavy gloves. He says, “I’m working on that building […]

The Jasper Raven Fight

This morning as I walked past the legion hall in Jasper, Alberta, I saw a raven attacking his reflection in the window. I laughed and continued on. After I walked around the block I saw that he was still fighting with himself. I then realized that I had a camera built into my cell phone, […]

Kamloops to Jasper; The Buildup

Day Two: Kamloops, British Columbia to Jasper, Alberta, Canada. “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” – Mark Twain This morning we left out of Kamloops in a blaze of sunshine. We headed north out of town, following the railroad tracks and the Thompson River.

Vancouver to Kamloops

We’re on the road! After a leisurely start this morning, doing last-minute laundry and final packing of the car, Larra and I hit the road at 11 am. We drove Canada 1 from Vancouver to Hope, then north through the Frasier Canyon, up to Cache Creek, then east to Kamloops. We were going to camp […]

Adios Vancouver, Hola North America

Today’s the day! The car is packed, and off we go… After months of talk and planning, we’ve mutually manifested this trip, and it’s happening. Vancouver to Niagara Falls to Key West to Los Algodones, Mexico, up the west coast of the US and back to Vancouver, in the next few months. Oh. We’re going […]

Where We’ve Been

Since I got to Vancouver on May 27, through Sunday, June 12, this is a rough map of the places we’ve visited. Just a few more days until we’re on the road to Kamloops, Jasper and Points East.

Meeting the Family

Today I had to meet, I mean, met Larra’s sisters, Priscilla and Marilyn, and Larra’s nephew, Colten. We went to Cockney King Restaurant, which was appropriate, hanging with these British chicks. I played the part of the trophy husband quite well, though when I went outside after lunch to have a cigarette with Marilyn, she […]

Summer’s Over Already?

When I got up this morning it was cold out, again. Finally, at 10 am, it got up to 15 C (60 F), so I put on my “driving up Haleakala volcano” clothing and ventured outside. To my surprise I saw ducks migrating south. I think the last five warm days that we had are […]

Charlie the Shoplifter

Today we took Charlie to the pet food store in Cloverdale. I went out to the car, Larra was paying the bill, and Charlie took advantage of the unsupervised moment to help himself to a bully stick! Sharon, the clerk, was nice enough to make Charlie a gift of it, instead of calling the RCMP […]

An Afternoon at Crescent Beach, Surrey, BC

Sunday was ANOTHER beautiful day in Vancouver, with temperatures reaching 30 C (85 F). I was amused at how many people complained about the heat. I also learned that Larra’s house, like most in Vancouver, have great furnaces but NO air conditioning! Latitude shock! We went to Crescent Beach, BC, and had lunch with Larra’s […]

Beautiful Alouette Lake, BC

Jim: Today was the nicest day I’ve seen yet in Vancouver. Saturday afternoon Larra and I went with her daughter, Michelle, and Michelle’s husband Jarrod to Golden Ears Provincial Park, about 45 minutes from Surrey. Temperatures in the 30’s C (80’s F), and not a cloud in the sky. We walked along the river, down […]
